Tackling the Art of Photography

In the realm of public relations, it is never a bad idea to be a double or even a triple threat in the job market. It is a wise choice to master some skills to add in your tool box. In today’s world, visual content is an important aspect to carry a story to its full potential. A nice skill set to add under your name would be photography.

Here are six tips that will help you capture that stellar shot.

Lighting

This element is very important to control when you are out on the field. A good rule of thumb is to study paintings because painters are always creating a source of light and determine where it is coming from.

Have an Aspiration folder

Start a Clip File of pictures and even stories that you are drawn to for reference. Scavenger through magazines and newspapers such as Humans of New York, National Geographic and The New York Times. Challenge yourself to recreate the images you have collected. Let this inspire you to create your own twist and grow.

The More The Merrier

Do not be afraid to take five, ten or even a hundred shots to get that stellar portrait that you want. It is better to have too many than too little.

Aim for the Eyes

If you are taking pictures of people, probably the most important thing is to focus on the highlight in people’s eyes.

If you are photographing people at an angle, you want to focus on the highlight of the closest eye

Preparation

Do your research. Study your subject beforehand and know how it is going to be used so that you have a solid execution.

When you’re prepared, your subject will appreciate that you know what you are doing and may even consider spending more time in the secession.

Practice

Practice makes perfect. You can’t wait for the moment to happen and expect a great picture.

Start by taking photos of the people around you or objects as a simple as a name tag. Find unique angles that enhances your subject and experiment with what you have.
