The Dynamic Duo

Reporters and public relations specialists share a special bond when it comes to bringing content and ideas to their publics. With that in mind, it is important to know how to interact with each other as well as know how to deliver relevant topics on the table.

Here are few practices that would help us in our future careers. Content, reputation and communication are key themes to focus on when having a productive relationship with the reporters.

A good rule of thumb is to research the reporter when pitching a story. You have to make sure that the media release is relevant and thoughtful to the specified audience. Also, make sure that the content has clarity and that the release is easy for the reporter to understand where you are coming from. In other words, limit jargon as much as possible.

Maintaining a reputation for your organization as well as your own go hand in hand. You have to maintain a professional image because you are an employee that represents your organization, brand or company. Another practice that might help with this is to observe ethical standards.

A good example would be to decline to any meals or gifts no matter how small the gesture may be to avoid misconceptions.

Finally, it is always a good idea to personalize communication with the reporter whom you are working with. Follow them on social media so that you have a reference of their work ethic and know what stories they have been involved with. It is all of a matter of integrity and trust towards one another.

In conclusion, these practices mainly revolve around establishing a good and professional relationship between the reporter and the public relations specialist. The work flow on each other’s half will be able to flow more efficiently and will effectively get the message out there.
